If you make it to the top of Flattop Mountain you should definitely continue on to Hallett Peak. We took the Flattop Trail from Bear Lake to reach Hallett Peak.

We brought up 1.5 liters of water each and drank all of it- remember it's ENTIRELY uphill and very little shade! But like John Denver was a Rocky Mountain high! We took many photos and enjoyed the overlooks- we had to get our fill for the next few years! Others (younger, more in shape, acclimated) were able to do this faster. Loved the marmots and pikas (see photos) I'll state our hike times but keep in mind that we were DEFINITELY not fast! It took us 5 hours to the peak and 3 hours back down. We reached Flat Top and thought 'We made it this far, what's a little further?' There is no 'peak' to Flat Top (hence the name) so Hallett made us really feel like we were on top of a mountain! A little rock wall wind breaker is up there to relax and eat a snack and enjoy the outstanding panoramic views. Wore a tank top and shorts and as we got higher I only added a long sleeve jacket and head scarf to keep my hair from blowing all over. (got a killer sunburn on the back of my legs from the hike down) The winds picked up once we were above the tree line which also made it more difficult to breathe. The shade at the lower elevations is very welcome as there is very little to none for the top half of this trail. Our goal was Flat Top Mountain and 'maybe' Hallett Peak depending on how our lungs were doing.

Still plenty of parking available at that time considering it had been light out for almost 2 hours. We did this hike on June 27 and arrived to the trailhead before 7:00. Anything above tree line (11,000 feet) is challenging for us but we know to just go slow and we'll get there. Looking for a mountain top close to Estes Park? This is it!! We are 2 'Flatlanders' who love being in the mountains- but only get the chance every 2-3 years. Its a must visit if you are in the region. This and Pikes Peak are among the easiest to reach the top. From the top there is 360 degree views of the beautiful Colorado Rocky Mountains. My Tennessee lungs worked hard to take in enough oxygen in this high altitude environment. It is a short walk up a rocky trail to the very top. We also saw more mountain goats around the parking lot. There are restrooms and an old house/nightclub foundation with historical significance. We stopped at a mountain lake near the top and saw a heard of mountain sheep that pretty much ignored the presence of people.

At some points the pavement can be very rough due to the freezing and thawing. The lack of guardrails along this narrow highway certainly can cause excitement and makes the driver pay attention. Once above the timberline the view become spectacular. The trip up winds through beautiful mountain scenery.
